A decade of assassinations had come to a close just as the promise of civil rights was fulfilling itself. Four men had walked on the moon, and another mammoth rocket stood poised in a matrix of white light, ready to deliver two more. The country was waging a cold war over ideology, and an actual war in a small country half a world away for reasons no one could clearly define. Watergate lay just beyond the crown of the horizon. More than any other event, the war in Vietnam would define the times. This was the cardinal crisis. I was a young man then, and I had a particular interest in what was taking place in the rice paddies and jungle there. The nature of the war, its lack of clarity and structure, translated into bewildering social and political turmoil here at home. I was ambivalent about its execution, if not its objectives, for personal reasons. Family friends had fought in Korea, a 'conflict' Congress hadn't declared a war. I now saw, as many Americans did, that the country had haplessly meandered down a similar path in Southeast Asia. I knew men who had fought in World War II and were summoned a few years later to fight in what was called a 'police action' in another Asian country. Little did anyone suspect the precedent would make for morally baffling circumstances a decade later when the mixture of political and military folly would become all too apparent. I now believed that if the nation was going to commit its troops to combat, Congress should have passed a declaration of war. The country should have united itself long ago either by carrying the burden of total commitment or by getting out. Warfare was, and is, too serious a business. But like all wars, Vietnam proved easier getting into than out of, and now, in 1970, we were again trying to extricate ourselves as gracefully as we could from another seemingly intractable situation. Meanwhile, many of my generation were patricidal. I wasn't among them. I saw the marches on the capital as part of the democratic process, yet loathed the sanctimony of the protesters who resorted to violence and obstructed governmental functions. I was of a different temperament; there is a military tradition in my family that stretches back to the Civil War. My grandfather was in the U.S. Army Cavalry. His troop was sent to Mexico to pursue Pancho Villa -- the last mounted cavalry troop to actively engage in combat. When World War I broke out, they were dismounted and sent to France under the command of General Pershing, where my grandfather was gassed with dichlorodiethyl sulfide, or what was known as mustard gas. After living the life of a semi-invalid, he died of lung cancer at age fifty -- a late casualty of the War to End All Wars. A generation later, my father was an instructor for the Army Air Corps before joining the Navy during World War II and serving aboard the USS Saratoga. Several uncles, both maternal and paternal, fought in the Pacific and European theaters, and for four and a half years I myself had been a Marine. On November 16, 1964, less than a year after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, I left the Corps to become a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. His assassination, in a very real way, brought me into the Bureau, and in 1970 I was assigned to the Philadelphia field office. The turmoil of these days was so vast and all-encompassig that it touched everyone, including me. At the time, my work was at once challenging and provincial, as we went after members of the Weather Underground who had killed a police officer while robbing a Boston bank. Armed with automatic weapons, they robbed another bank in our territory; on their way out they threw a Molotov cocktail into the lobby that failed to ignite. Organized crime in the form of La Cosa Nostra (LCN) and the Black Mafia also had a strong presence here. My job was a heady experience, in part because of my youth. The small duster of men in my squad were some of the youngest in the Bureau, and by November we were just hitting our stride. I was a supervisor of criminal investigations, working hard on cases the FBI considered its bread and butter, which gradually raised my profile within the Bureau. Looking back on it now, I can say without hesitation that it was the most fulfilling work I've ever known. Three nights a week I went to graduate school at Temple University on the G.I. Bill, and during the day I enforced the laws of the land. My wife, Sharon, and our three boys, Russ, Jeff, and Chris, were happy and settled in the first house we had ever owned. We were young and our lives wonderfully hectic. Our small coterie of friends hosted cookouts, Sharon played cards with the wives of other agents on Wednesday nights, and I was a scoutmaster. After having lived in a dozen homes during the past decade, we finally knew something with the feel of permanence here in the South Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia. But in November of 1970 I abruptly discovered that all this was about to change. I was about to be drawn more closely into the turmoil of the new decade. One afternoon while I was out on the streets, my Special Agent in Charge (SAG), Joe Jamieson, called me to say that he had some good news. When I came into his office, he was holding a letter in his hand. He dosed the door behind me and asked me to sit down. 'Buck, congratulations.' 'What about, boss?' 'You've just been transferred to the Seat of Government.' It took me a moment to comprehend the news. This, I knew, was the archaic language J. Edgar Hoover himself used in reference to the FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C. I told the inspector I wanted to stay in the field. 'Well, they want you in Washington,' Joe said, still smiling slyly. 'Your name's come up,' As I stood before him, slack-jawed and disbelieving, he explained that it was all a part of the new organized crime initiative. Hoover had approved my transfer to Washington where I was to oversee organized crime investigations in the Northeast. Shortly after Richard Nixon's election in November of 1968, he had announced an offensive against organized crime. A thousand new FBI agents would be hired for the effort, and in Washington, J. Edgar Hoover wanted some new young blood to help spearhead operations. I learned that I was to become part of a grander scheme. This should have been good news, but it wasn't. Certainly a move to Washington was considered a promotion, and if you wanted to advance within the Bureau, a stint at Headquarters was mandatory. My family and I, however, had made a home for ourselves here in the Philadelphia area, and I was completely fulfilled in the work I was already doing. Moreover, the real estate market in Washington was vastly overinflated. The sad irony was that we would have a difficult time making ends meet on a government salary at the Seat of Government. So I asked Joe if he could call Headquarters to see if I could get out of it. He looked at me askance. 'You don't say no to the folks in Washington.' Then he explained that even if I did turn down the opportunity, I would promptly be transferred. Whether I wanted to or not, I was leaving Philadelphia. When I broke the news to Sharon that night, she wasn't happy to hear it either. But she also understood that ultimately the move could be good for the family. This severe short-term disruption could make for long-standing security. This would be the national stage and a necessary step if I was going to ultimately advance in the Bureau. So we were headed for Washington. Several days after learning of the transfer, Joe instructed me to write a letter to Hoover personally, telling him how I looked forward to the challenge of this new position and when I would be arriving in Washington. I recommend this book for a well written viewpoint and a non-abusive style from the former Assistant Director of the FBI (with the help of Dwight Williams). Presumably his "nemesis" under Clinton, Director Freeh, has a book written by himself somewhere, and it will only be fair to compare the versions of the two books. Read More Rating - Exciting Information With Revealing Insight It is an informative novel which gives exciting insight into one of the most famous law enforcement agencies of America. Not only learning about the cases that Oliver Revell worked on, but knowing how others in the FBI, including J. Edgar Hoover, thought and said is purely fascinating. This is a must read to anyone interested in the FBI, law enforcement, or federal government agencies. Rating - Interesting read, a bit cluttered Revell, in this co-authored book, believes in the philosophy "never say in 350 pages what you can say in 570." The events are apparently purely chronological, and almost stream-of-consciousness. There's a lot of jumping from subject to subject, with little transition or unifying theme. While the book has a bibliography and index, it's lacking a glossary, which would be helpful for those of us who don't use acronyms like OSG, JSOC, CSG, and ... Chris Revell's flight plans were changed at least two weeks prior to Thanksgiving that year in early or mid-November.
