Customer Reviews for: The Message: The Bible In Comtemporary Language, Large Print Numbered Edition

Rating 4 out of 5 - An excellent adjunct to the Bible
This is NOT a substitute for the Bible scriptures. But it is a book that is an excellent aid after you have read a Biblical passage that is somewhat confusing. Peterson's text is written in modern language that is easy to read.

Rating 5 out of 5 - The Truth about God
This is a great Bible if you like to just sit down and read it through. The "message" of how good God is comes through as you read. The quality of the book itself is outstanding--nice genuine leather cover, easy to read print, not too large and not too small. This particular edition is not as good for use as a study Bible because verses aren't numbered, except at the beginning of paragraphs.

Rating 5 out of 5 - Easier reading!
The larger type in this Bible makes for much easier reading.
Some of the advertised large types are still not large enough to help much.
Also, I can find certain passages better with the verses being numbered.
The Message Bible is easy to understand because it reads like the way people talk today. It is exactly like new. Thank you.

Rating 3 out of 5 - An inductive commentary - not a Bible per se'
Disclaimer: This is a review of "The Message" as a publication, not of this particular binding.

While Mr.Peterson has some refreshingly plain and sometimes very apt insights into what God's Word is saying, in modern vernacular, please keep in mind that this is not a "literal" translation. In fact, if there ever was a translation of a translation, as one reviewer put it, this is it!

Be sure and remember that this is Mr. Peterson's "take" on the Word of God. He invests so much of his interpretation into this translation that it should more accurately be called an "Inductive Commentary".

While at times Peterson makes a thought or point clearer (Romans 7 for example), it seems to me that many other times his interpretation muddies the waters a bit (Romans 8). He also tends to be a bit presumptuous about changes he makes. For example (and I use this as it's not doctrinal) in Job 41:25 he writes "Even angels run for cover when he surfaces, cowering before his tail-thrashing turbulence." vs the NASB's "When he raises himself up, the mighty fear; Because of the crashing they are bewildered." I think it's a bit of a leap to presume that "the mighty" are angels or that any angel would be bewildered by one of God's creatures.

If you decide to purchase or read "The Message" please compare what Mr.Peterson says with what God has said, in a more literal translation such as the NASB,ESV,RSV,KJV or even the NIV. Trusting in "The Message" alone is akin to trusting your soul to a man. It's maddening to me when a person is confronted with a biblical truth, and answers "I'll have to ask my pastor about that." Using "The Message" as your only window into God's mind is like that. And I consider it somewhat dangerous as a result.

Rating 5 out of 5 - Fantastic value
For anyone who already knows about the Message Bible paraphrase, this is a fantastic find. I have bought 2 of them and plan to purchase more. The quality is great and I found nothing to compare at this price. It is great as a gift and for someone who wants to understand more about the Bible, this is a great way to read it.
