Customer Reviews for: Fix, Freeze, Feast: More than 125 recipes to prepare in bulk and by the serving

Rating 5 out of 5 - I don't usually buy cookbooks but...
I haven't bought a cookbook in three years because most just don't have enough good recipes. I first borrowed it from the library and then had to have my own copy!

My family (six people that includes three picky toddlers) have tried ten of these recipes and all of them were winners! Although they need some tweaking to suit my family's particular taste they are all awesome.

Two great things that really make this book stand out is the emphasis placed on tray packs and realistic preparation time. A "tray pack" is the amount of food (usually meat) found in a tray at a warehouse store. For example, a tray pack of ground beef is usually around six pounds and the recipes use that number to make "three meals of four servings each".

Related to the tray pack method, I love that it doesn't take an entire day to prepare lots of dishes. You take your six pounds of ground beef and make three meals. I like to eat one that night and stick the other two in the freezer for the coming weeks. I don't have to make an entire week's worth of food in one day and I'm not so tired by the end that we just can't imagine eating. It really doesn't take me much longer to do three meals than one and it really pays off next week.

The last great thing is that the recipes don't rely on strange ingredients. Everything is targeted towards normal people cooking with normal things in our pantry. Dried basil and oregano may make an appearance, but file powder will not. There are even recipes for pie spice and cajun seasoning so you don't have to buy the prepackaged stuff.

My family has particularly enjoyed Rice Pilaf, Ginger Beef, and Sticky Drunk Pig on a Stick. All of them are already in my recipe box after only two tastings!

Rating 5 out of 5 - Fix, Freeze, and Feast
I love this cookbook. I have already made at least 6 recipes from this book. I had most of the ingredients already in my kitchen. I don't like fufu food. I have three kids and I don't have time for fluff. These meals were pretty easy to make, have frozen well, and have tasted great. I am looking forward to trying more.

Rating 4 out of 5 - A great freezer cooking book
This is a great freezer cooking book. It is written around the method of cooking, which is described as "the tray pack method". It differs from the rigid OAMC scheme of making many different types of meals on one day with a calender of meals, etc. This book just organizes recipes by main protein, and describes them using a pack of of a given protein. There are no schedules, or calendars to imitate, you pick whatever dishes you want and go from there. The recipes are sized to use the entire tray pack (usually 6-8 lbs). More like the "mini marathons" you may read about in the older OAMC books. So you can pull off a few of these meals without spending the whole day prepping a month's worth of food. The recipes were simple and based on what "REAL" people eat, yet most of the recipes are very "new" in their approach.
I found the recipes had a fresh, young feel, and are more tailored to modern tastes. There are marinades and sauces with alcohol (gasp!) and lots of deserts and even veggie-friendly recipes. I enjoyed reading it and I am excited to try the recipes soon!
I also loved the labels in the back of the book and the added website support of the authors! (you can actually print the pre-formatted Avery labels from the Storey site! awesome!) It is really a book for MODERN cooks. They also have their own separate website/blog. Those added extras really make it neat.
I have several books from Storey Publishing, and they are all very good!
Note to avid Amazon review readers:
I recommend using the "search inside" feature and read a passage or two. I think it is a great addition to a OAMC library, and a great cookbook for anyone, whether they freeze the recipes or not! I bought it because it was well reviewed on amazon, and I agree with the other reviewers, it's a great cookbook!

Rating 4 out of 5 - Quick Meals
The cookbook has some great recipes in it. The best part is creating meals with friends or family. My daughters and I got together and created several meals, and spent a day together. The only downfall is there are no pictures. I'm glad I bought it and can adjust the recipes for my own tastes.

Rating 4 out of 5 - Handy reference for Make Ahead Freezer Meals
Great recipes. This book directly addressed our need for recipies for group assembled/cooked freezer meals. I only wish nutritional information was included. I recently hosted a day-of-cooking with four women. We made a number of recipes from this cookbook. I especially liked the cooking instructions that can be photocopied directly from the book and attached to the meal going in the freezer.
