While there are many varieties of currency errors, those listed here in our price guide are the most commonly seen and most commonly found types. As a rule of thumb, the more striking the error, the more collectors are willing to pay. Many major errors sell for thousands of dollars. The most famous error, "The Del Monte Note" which was an Obstructed Printing Error, had a "Del Monte Ecuador" banana sticker attached to the paper before the 3rd printing. This resulted in part of the treasury seal and serial number being printed over the sticker itself. That note sold through Heritage Auctions on Jan 22, 2021 for $396,000.00, which included the Buyer's Premium. While it is not likely one will find such a rarity of such magnitude in their wallet, many very valuable rarities do find their way into circulation and can be worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The prices for the error notes listed here in our guide are what one could expect to pay or realize when selling at auction or in a retail sale for the grades listed.
